3-terminal or 4-terminal
Three terminals are enough for a standard earth pit. Four terminals let you also measure soil resistivity, which helps when you are designing a new earthing system.

Spikes and leads matter
The reading depends on the auxiliary spikes and leads. Confirm what is supplied with the tester before you order.

Analog or digital
Analog earth testers are hand-cranked and need no batteries. Digital models are quicker to read and easier to repeat.
