Insulation Testers (Megohmmeters)

An insulation tester applies a high DC test voltage and measures the leakage through insulation, so you can find a failing motor winding, cable or transformer before it trips a breaker or burns out. OhmKart carries hand-driven and motorised analog testers as well as digital models with a display.

How to choose.

  1. 1

Match the test voltage to the equipment

Low-voltage wiring is normally tested at 500 V or 1000 V. Motors, cables and switchgear rated higher are tested at 2500 V or 5000 V. Using too low a voltage can hide a weak spot.

  2. 2

    Check the resistance range

Pick a range that comfortably covers the value you expect. A tester that tops out at 100 MΩ cannot tell a healthy 5 GΩ cable from a marginal one.

  3. 3

    Analog or digital

Hand-driven analog testers need no batteries and survive rough site use. Digital testers give a clear numeric reading and suit lab and commissioning work.
