Analog or digital? Choosing the right style of test instrument

When a hand-driven analog insulation tester is the better buy, and when digital wins. A straight comparison for field and lab use.

Analog and digital test instruments both measure the same thing. They differ in how you read the result and what they need to run.

Where analog wins

  • No batteries to run flat. A hand-driven tester generates its own test voltage.
  • Robust in dust, damp and rough handling on site.
  • The needle shows a trend at a glance, such as insulation resistance climbing during a test.
  • Long working life with simple maintenance.

Where digital wins

  • A numeric reading, with no scale to interpret.
  • Quicker spot checks by operators who are less familiar with the instrument.
  • Compact and light.
  • Often combines several functions in one instrument.

Our suggestion

For site maintenance and field work, an analog tester like the CIE/444 or CIE/777 HM is a dependable choice. For commissioning, labs and quick checks, a digital model like the DIT-5000 or DET-2000 is easy to use. Many teams carry both.
