Digital tachometer buying guide: contact, non-contact or both

How to choose a handheld digital tachometer in India: contact vs photo, RPM and surface-speed range, accuracy, and a side-by-side of the Systems Tech HTM 590, HTM 560 and HTM 890.

The short answer

Shaft you can touch, or belts and rollers to measure in m/min: the contact HTM 590. Guarded, small, hot or very fast shafts: the non-contact HTM 560, which reads up to 1,00,000 RPM. Mixed work and you want one tool: the HTM 890 with a contact side and a photo side.

What a tachometer tells you

A tachometer measures how fast something turns, in revolutions per minute (RPM). It is the quickest way to check that a motor, fan, pump or spindle is running at the speed it should. A motor that is slower than its nameplate under load, a belt that is slipping or a fan that is running fast all show up on a tachometer before they show up as a failure.

Contact or non-contact?

A contact tachometer presses a rubber tip against the end of the shaft. A non-contact (photo) tachometer reads a strip of reflective tape from a distance with a light beam. Neither is better in every case, so choose by the job.

What all three share

  • Quartz crystal time base with 0.05% + 1 digit accuracy.
  • 5-digit, 10 mm red LED display.
  • Resolution of 0.1 RPM up to 1000 RPM, then 1 RPM.
  • Last, maximum and minimum readings stored automatically.
  • Four AA batteries with auto shut-off, and a padded carrying case.

Do you need surface speed?

Belts, conveyors, rollers, paper and textile lines are specified in metres per minute rather than RPM. Only the contact models read that: fit the peripheral (wheel) tip and the display shows m/min directly. The HTM 560 reads RPM only.

Tip. If you can only buy one instrument and your jobs vary, the HTM 890 avoids owning two tachometers. If the work is one repeated task, a single-method model is lighter and costs less.

Safety

Safety. Keep hands, cuffs and loose clothing away from rotating shafts. If the shaft end is not guarded or you cannot reach it safely, use the non-contact method from a distance.

Our picks

Which tachometer is best for measuring motor RPM?

For a motor with an accessible shaft end, the HTM 590 is simple and accurate. If the shaft is guarded or you want to stay clear of it, use the HTM 560 with reflective tape, or the HTM 890 for both.

Can a tachometer measure belt or conveyor speed?

Yes, a contact tachometer with the wheel tip reads surface speed in m/min. The HTM 590 and HTM 890 read 6 to 5000 m/min.

What is the accuracy of these tachometers?

All three are 0.05% + 1 digit with a quartz crystal time base.

Do I get a GST invoice?
